……So, what is a Froothie? Well, it’s a pretty neat and awesome bit of kit! I was sent a Froothie OPTIMUM 9200 NEXT GENERATION blender (RRP: £429), although if you buy one now, you can save a WHOPPING £100 and secure one of these amazing machines for only £329! The list of what you can do and make in one of these blenders is astounding…….. So far, I have made a curd and this sauce in my Froothie, and both have turned out well – with the curd being an absolute winner, as the machine cooks the eggs as it blends – that recipe will be on Lavender and Lovage in a few days. But back to today’s recipe – as you can see from the photo collage above, I simply chucked all the ingredients in the large 2 litre Froothie jug, blended the sauce for UNDER a minute and voilà, I was rewarded with a spicy, creamy and delicious enchilada sauce for all my Mexican cooking…

The Optimum 9400 is designed to bring professional level specification into your own home. I use my blender several times daily and it comes with me on my nourishing cookery days. This is one of the most powerful blenders on the market and I have really put it through its paces. Whether you want to make super healthy smoothies, dips and spreads, soups, desserts, nut milks, nut and seed flours, nut butters, instant healthy ice cream and sorbets this will do it all for you!

The Optimum 600 Juicer is a fabulous higher quality masticating juicer.  Not only is it fast with minimum preparation time thanks to the large chute & Auger but it can handle a wide variety of fruits and vegetables including my favourite - leafy greens. Whether you are new to juicing or a juicer convert you will find this juicer produces exceptional smooth juice in minutes.

A comprehensive summary of why Juicing and which juicer to use :

    Why Juice ? :

    • Many nutritionists recommend getting at least 6-8 servings of vegetables and 2-3 portions of fruits per day, which very few people actually get.
    • Juicing is an easy way to virtually guarantee that you will reach your daily target for fruit and vegetables.
    • Juicing encourages you to consume an optimal amount of vegetables in an efficient manner.
    • Juicing allows you to absorb nutrients from vegetables / fruits more easily especially if you suffer with poor digestive health
    • It provides you with an easy way to add a variety of vegetables to your diet and a fabulous way to try new vegetables
    • Juicing can also be targeted towards your own health needs –e.g adding in ginger for digestion or turmeric for inflammation, betacarotene rich sources for healthy eyes etc.
    • Juicing is a very powerful tool that you can use to accelerate your progress towards optimal health. Many people start juicing to kick start a new healthier eating programme
    • Fresh juices also have remarkable cleansing powers – their high water content is essential for hydrating and cleaning the body of waste and they contain a range of compounds such as citric and malic acid, pectin and chlorophyll known for their ability to absorb fats and toxins from the digestive tract. Green vegetable juices (e.g. broccoli, spinach, kale, wheatgrass) are rich in chlorophyll, and magnesium to support energy levels.
    • Optimise nutrients – an easy way to cram in essential nutrients esp if you struggle eating platefuls of vegetables
    • Maximise nutrients with minimum of fuss – Some micronutrients become damaged when you heat foods. Cooking and processing food destroys these micronutrients by altering their shape and chemical composition e.g phytonutrients and vitamin C. Juicing ensures high levels of these valuable nutrients

    Which Juicer to Use?

    There are two main types:

Centrifugal – These are often cheaper (they grate, chop then spin to separate the juice from the pulp). They generally cannot handle a lot of produce in one go and cannot process leafy greens, wheatgrass. Some are very noisy. A spinning basket shreds the fruits and vegetables using a sharp disc, pushing the juice through a fine strainer by centrifugal force. Depending on brand/model, the juice may get foamy and thus oxidize more rapidly – this may deplete the levels of antioxidants present.

Masticating – (Also known as Slow Juicers, Cold Press, Single Gear, or Single Auger). Masticating juicers “chew,” or masticate, your produce by grinding (like teeth) and then squeezing the juice out. These are ideal if you really want to maximise the benefits of juicing and like to try an incorporate juices into your diet on a regular basis. Good quality masticating juicers produce a high juice yield and less pulp. As they generates less foam the juices oxidize slower which maximises their nutrient content. These types of juicers can juice most fruits and vegetables including wheatgrass, leafy greens, herbs and berries. While old models used to be harder to clean the modern juicers are now designed to be easy to clean and have minimal preparation time – large shutes mean no cutting up etc.

The result was a warm rather than really hot soup (though in fairness it might have got hotter if I’d kept blitzing), with a remarkably fresh taste.  I’ve made enough to try the mixture chilled tomorrow and I’m sure it’s a very healthy way to cook as well as producing something that explodes with flavour.  My original plan was to make something for a 5:2 fast day but I didn’t have the half fat creme fraiche I meant to use and instead poured in a whole carton of oatly single cream.  The result was delicious but since the carton of cream had about 350 calories, I abandoned all hope of fasting and enjoyed the soup instead.  Well worth abandoning my fast day – and VERY quick!

The pulse function is a good way to keep control over what you are processing and to not ‘over process’. For example, if you popped some peanuts into the jug and wanted them rough ground for a Thai style salad dressing, due to the power of the blades within no time you’d have peanut butter! Instead, whizz the peanuts in bursts using the pulse switch and you have complete control over the texture of the nuts.
Froothie High Performance Blender Review - The Hedgecombers

My favourite design element is the rubber cushion pad. You just sit the jug onto those 4 cushioned ‘fingers’ and it’s all lined up and ready to go. On my old blender you have to line up these 2 teeny arrows and it drives me a little bit mad each time I have to use it.

Froothie High Performance Blender Review - the Hedgecombers

So my overall verdict so far is really rather impressed.

The reason power blenders such as Vitamix and Froothie’s Optimum 9400 are great for making custard is that you can throw all the ingredients in to the blender jug, switch on and gradually ramp up the speed to its highest setting. Simply leave the blender running for several minutes; the speed of the powerful blades generates enough heat to cook the custard. Believe me, after 7 minutes, our custard was steaming hot! And because we had confidence in the power of the blades, we dropped the solid pieces of white chocolate straight into the hot custard and blended again. The Optimum 9400 blades broke the chocolate down quickly and the heat melted and combined it thoroughly into the custard base.

    Kellie Anderson:Food to Glow

Kate Magic Kellie is an American living in Scotland. Kellie is a health educationist and nutrition adviser at the Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres. Although Kellie is not vegan she mainly eats a vegan diet and that is reflected in her healthy recipes.

Being a fairly methodical person I really wanted to make sure that I had run it through its paces before I passed on my assessment. And I wanted to do a couple of side by side challenges against my Vitamix to see how my two machines compared.

For my head-to-head challenges I made today’s smoothie, a double batch of beetroot and cashew hummus, some frozen yogurt and sunflower seed butter. Both machines performed very well – as would be expected of high level machines. But there are a few points that may tip the balance in the Froothie’s favour:

    1. cost
    2. quietness
    3. ease of blending
    4. blending time

The cost difference alone would swing it for me: £599 for the Vitamix Pro 500 versus £329 for the Froothie Optimum 9400.

Helping me along the road to smoothie heaven is my new little friend; he’s been part of the family for a couple of weeks now and he’s fitted in just fine. Welcome Optimum 9400! He sounds a bit like a Transformer, a Good Guy Autobot of course; but actually he’s a super duper blender from Froothie, and I love him!

Whilst the Optimum can handle everything from strawberries to paving slabs; I’ve been mainly blitzing fruit, some protein shakes and indulging in my caffeine addiction with skinny caramel frappuccinos. They’ll all be coming up soon. But I also want to but the Optimum to the test with a load of other things it can do including:

Kate Magic Michelle is a food writer and photographer from South Africa who know lives in London and blogs recipes using the freshest of ingredients.

In the meantime I’ve also received a Froothie Optimum 9400 machine. Since it’s an Australian company, the brand is relatively unknown in the UK. Vitamix is quite famous by now but its price clocks in at £600, which is off-putting. At £329, almost half of the latters price, Froothie is much more affordable plus, and this is a big plus, its motor is much stronger at 2,238 Watts compared to Vitamix’s 1,492 Watts. Check out Froothie to view their full range of products and more information.

As many of you know, I’ve been a devoted user of the Vitamix for years, so when the opportunity came along to try out the Froothie Optimum 9400 Blender I felt a little bit like I was cheating on an old and very dear friend. But I decided to have an open mind and see what this new kid on the block could do. A few weeks ago I stashed away my Vitamix and replaced it with the Froothie to see how it worked for my daily blending needs.

Daily? That’s right. I’m a pretty heavy blender user – I make smoothies for breakfast every day and often (at least once per week) use the blender for other tasks such as pureed soups, custard for ice cream, almond milk, cashew gravy and on special occasions, raw raspberry cheesecake. I need a blender that can withstand my serious usage and heavy pureeing needs.

Froothie have come up with a powerful mean machine called Optimum 9400 which will blast any ingredient and blitz it to a delicious purée in moments, furthermore it crushes ice like it cutting through butter, it chops, grates, grinds and whips and you can use it with wet or dry ingredients in it without buying a separate jug. It also makes instant icecreams for the summer and warm soups for the winter so you can make use of  it the whole year around.

Franglais Kitchen also contribute to Flavour on radio Cambridge 105.

At first glance this sturdy blender with its 2litre capacity is similar in appearance to the Vitamix, but in fact the engine is more powerful and slightly quieter (a big bonus!). For us though, the best thing is the blade – the Froothie blender has a 6 blade assembly, 4 facing up and 2 down. Why is this good? because when you are only blending small quantities, you get more a more efficient chopping of the ingredients than blenders with only upward facing blades (Vitamix included).

As the machine has a very powerful motor, it won’t burn out like other cheaper alternatives. Have a look at the specifications  of the Optimum 9400 compared to the Vitamix, another blender on the market.

The Optimum 9400, which is available at a special introductory cost of £329, also has a 10 year extended warranty so you can be rest assured you will be using it for years to come. The cost is really good value when you consider cheaper models won't do a fraction of the things a 9400 will and it is considerably less expensive than other high-end blenders which can retail up to £600.

    Kate Hackworthy:Veggie Desserts

Kate Hackworthy Kate has a rather unusual blog. Kate makes healthy desserts from vegetables. This year Kate won Best Food Blog in the UK National Blog Awards, was listed as one of the Top Bloggers of the Year by Top Sante Magazine and was named Jamie Oliver's blog of the month in February.

You’ve heard me talking about my new high-speed blender for a few months now. I rarely accept review products so I wanted to give it a really thorough test before posting an actual review of it. Well, I can definitely say that owning my Froothie has been amazing. A whole new world of healthy eating has been opened up to me and I have saved a lot of money on nut milk and by using up vegetables in super-fast soup.

    So, what does it do?

I can honestly say that I will never, ever, make a milk and butter-laden cheese sauce again. A few vegetables (cauliflower and carrots), some vegetable stock and a scoop of nutritional yeast (available in many UK supermarkets and health food shops), blitzed up in seconds and I have a creamy, cheese-y, vegan cheese sauce that is perfect for so many uses. I loved it in vegetable lasagne, as mac n cheese and poured over vegetables.

If I have vegetables that are looking past their prime, then I just need to blitz them, raw, with some stock and herbs into an instant soup. Raw carrots and other hard vegetables don’t stand a chance – they’re blitzed in seconds in my blender. And the best part is that the Froothie heats it through the friction of the six blades in just a few minutes, preserving nutrients that can be lost through overheating. Hot soup in a couple of minutes. Seriously.

I am trying to eat healthier lately and so I decided that I would just throw some frozen berries into the Optimum 9400 along with some milk and a bit of honey, plus some vanilla.  A milk shake has to have vanilla!   I also added a bit of lemon juice to keep the colour nice and pink.  In less than two minutes I had the most delicious, creamiest milkshake I have ever eaten.  No kidding!  It had a beautiful thick texture. Just look at that . . . and the taste.  It was seriously delicious!  I haven't enjoyed my breakfast so much in a long time and I absolutely loved the fact that I was drinking/eating something which was quite healthy and yet seemed totally luxurious!

My second secret bug-fighting weapon has been my Froothie Optimum 9400 – a power blender that I’ve been trying out recently to make blended soups, smoothies and homemade raw dips and nut butters……..I’ve also found that since the Froothie Optimum 9400 can handle raw ingredients, including vegetables, nuts, seeds and all kinds of fruit, you are literally only ever a few minutes away from a cup of something tasty and nutritious in the form of a soup or smoothie. My little girl has discovered a love of soy milk (which she calls soil milk!) so I’ve also been making lots of milkshakes and smoothies with frozen bananas and a pinch of cinnamon or cocoa……

So, I’m very happy with my Optimum 9400 and there are still many more recipes to try. It’s easy to clean (once I’ve blended, I simply pour a little washing up liquid into the jug along with some warm water and then pop the lid back on and give it a quick whizz, followed by a quick rinse with clean water…..read more.

I’ve recently became Froothie ambassador in the UK and I couldn’t be happier, its a real honour to represent such an amazing product. The Optimum 9400 blender it’s sensational, I can do so much with it, which is awesome. I was used to another super powerful blender and I could compare both quite well. Let’s start with my review:

Have a look at a few recipes I’ve done using my blender:

    • The Optimum 9400 has six blades instead of the regular 4 that you can find in most super powerful blenders and that makes everything you blende smoother and creamier.
    • You can do toppings and filing for cakes, nut butter, nut milk, green juices, smoothies, cheesecake and even bread. I’ve once done a soup in less than 10 minutes and it was super hot. I know how crazy is that.
    • The powerful motor has 3 high speeds. The speed gets to 44,000 rpm and that allows you to do ice cream and soups.
    • The jug is Heat-Resistant BPA free with 2l capacity.
    • The blender also has a Built-in sensor to detect over-usage; prolonging life of blender
    • Green Energy Consumption: Proprietary carbon brush motor only draws the power demanded.
